Soil Moisture

Soil moisture is an important hydrological variable for climatic and agricultural modelling. It plays a critical role in governing water and energy balance between the land and atmosphere. Soil moisture is generally a highly variable parameter both temporally and spatially, especially at the soil surface. Besides, soil moisture is an important parameter required for operational weather services to agriculture Agromet Advisory Services. In view of this soil IMD started estimating soil moisture daily using Soil Water Balance Model with Gridded rainfall for 60 cm depth. In addition to realized estimation of soil moisture, IMD has also started soil moisture forecast on every Tuesday and Friday based on T1534 model which is value added by state meteorological centres.
