Drought Studies

Back to Agrimet Division's Research Activities

By analysing rainfall data since 1875, the probability of occurance of drought in various parts of India has been worked out. Different parameters like water availability, soil moisture stress, aridity index have been studied. Drought are monitored by deriving aridity anomalies on a fortnightly basis in the kharif season and weekly basis in the northeast monsoon season over the southern peninsula.

Studies were conducted to identify droughts based on rainfall indices. Occurrence of drought in India was studied using rainfall departure (less than 75 %) from normal as the criteria. Droughts in different parts of the country were also studied and a drought index was computed using Markov Chain model and used the same for identifying drought proneness.
