Grass Minimum Temperature

Back to Agroclimatic Information

During night, as the earth radiates heat into space, and becomes cooled, the layer immediately above cools by contact with the ground much more than the air some distance higher; so that the minimum temperature close to the ground will be some what lower than minimum temperature recorded in the Stevenson Screen. The grass minimum temperature (terrestrial radiation) is the lowest temperature attained by the air very near the ground surface at night.

The grass minimum temperature indicates the possibility of occurrence of ground frost. Such frost, occur on clear dry calm nights from December,January and February especially in Northern India, are destructive to some standing crops.
